
Πολλές φορές ακούμε εκφράσεις με χρώματα. Αυτές οι φράσεις δεν μορούμε να τις μεταφράσουμε λέξη προς λέξη γιατί δεν βγάζουν νόημα! Για παράδειγμα ας δούμε την έκφραση "I've got the blues." Αν το μεταφράσουμε λέξη προς λέξη τότε θα λέγαμε ¨΄Εχω τα μπλε."!
Το "I've got the blues." λοιπόν το μεταφράζουμε "Είμαι μελαγχολικός."
Αυτές οι εκφράσεις λέγονται Idioms (Ιδιωματισμοί) και εδώ θα δούμε κάποιους ιδιωματισμούς με ΧΡΩΜΑ.
Paint the town red = have a lot of fun out in the town (βγαίνω για διασκέδαση και περνάω πολύ καλά) We are going to paint the town red tonight!
See red = get very angry (θυμώνω πολύ) I always see red when he lies to me.
Caught red handed = catch in the act of doing. (πιάνω κάποιον στα πράσα,) The police caught the thief red handed.
In the red. = owe money (Χρωστάω λεφτά) At the end of the month, I am always in the red.
On red alert = prepared for a dangerous situation. (Προετοιμασμένος για επικίνδυνες καταστάσεις) In the summer, firefighters are always on red alert.
Red tape = complicated procedures and forms to fill in, that take a lot of time. (γραφειοκρατία) Sometimes there is a lot of red tape when you want to get a travel visa.
Give the red carpet treatment = give special treatment to someone who is very important. (συμπεριφέρομαι ξεχωριστά σε άτομο που είναι πολύ σημαντικό) The politician was given the red carpet treatment at the fund raiser.
To feel blue/ to have the blues = to feel sad (Είμαι μελαγχολικός) After my dog ran away, I felt blue/I had the blues..
Once in a blue moon = very rarely (πολύ σπάνια) We only go to that restaurant once in a blue moon.
Out of the blue = suddenly, unexpectedly (ξαφνικά, χωρίς να το περιμένουμε) She appeared out of the blue.
Until someone is blue in the face. = you do something continuously but without results. ( ενοχλημένος επειδή κάνω ή λέω κάτι συνέχεια αλλά χωρίς αποτέλεσμα) You can insist until you're blue in the face. I will never agree with you.
Blue-eyed boy = someone's favourite person. ( το αγαπημένο παιδί ή άτομο) Jill always believed that her brother was the blue-eyed boy in the family.
True blue = to be loyal or faithful. (είμαι πιστός) The couple swore they would be true blue to each other forever.
Blue collar worker = someone who does hard manual labour. (Κάποιος που κάνει σκληρή χειρονακτική εργασία) His political support comes from blue collar workers.
Give or get the green light = Give permission to continue. (δίνω 'ή παίρνω την άδεια ή το οκ να συνεχίσω) We were given the green light to continue our project.
Green thumb = have the ability to make plants grow. (έχω την δυνατότητα να καλλιεργώ φυτά) My sister has a green thumb and her garden is always full of flowers.
Green with envy = be very jealous of (ζηλεύω πολύ) Tina was green with envy when her friend bought a new car.
Turn green = look pale or sick ( φαίνομαι χλωμός και άρρωστος όταν ανακατεύομαι) The boy turned green at the sight of blood.
Raise the white flag = the signal of surrender. I give up (παραδίνομαι) All right, I raise the white flag. You win!
Say a white lie = harmless untruth (μικρό ψεματάκι) I didn't want to upset my friend, so I told her a white lie about her new haircut.
White elephant = something that we have that is no longer of value to us (κάτι που μας ανήκει που δεν έχει πια αξία) I believe that the second house we bought has now become a white elephant.
White collar worker = someone who works in an office. (κάποιος που δουλεύει σε γραφείο. People who work in offices are called white collar workers.
White Christmas = when it snows on Christmas. (όταν χιονίζει τα Χριστούγεννα) I'm dreaming of a white Christmas!
